7 September 2012 - Summer Cocktail War at The Hudson Terrace

The CEO and I like mixology and competition, so when we found out about the Iron Chef Style Summer Cocktail War at the Hudson Terrace.  Here is the ad for the event.

Last night was the final and it featured Guy, winner of the Spring Cocktail War and Sydney, who is a bartender in Atlanta (she got my vote for that alone).  There were three rounds, each with a secret ingredient, and our VIP tickets got us 5 tastings and 4 full size cocktails....in other words, drunk.

We got there a smidge late after a massive debacle on the R train and went over to try and score some food.  The food was terribad...basically, some chicken fingers, nachos and pigs in a blanket.  And mostly picked over first by Thingumajigs.  Yuck.

The first round's secret ingredient was banana.  Sydney's drink, called "Is That a Banana in Your Pants?" featured banana and strawberry purees with rum, ginger vodka and a splash of ginger ale.  It was epic!  Guy made something with cream and bananas and vodka that I didn't try and can't remember the name of at the moment.

The CEO and I both tried Sydney's drink.  He thought it was too sweet.  I really liked it.

The second round featured thyme.  Guy's drink, called "Somewhere in Thyme" had thyme simple syrup, St. Germaine (aka lady crack) and some other stuff.  Sydney made the "Water My Melon" which was a watermelon margarita with muddled thyme.  The CEO and I tried each of them and like the melon drink better.

They were both pretty good but Sydney's was shockingly not too sweet and pretty delish.  We liked it.

The final round featured chocolate syrup and The CEO and I were stoked, thinking this was the perfect chance for someone to use coffee.  Coffee is yummy.

Both bartenders made smores drinks.  I can't remember the names as I was choking back disappointment.  Both had marshmellow vodka.  Syndey's had actual graham crackers in it so we didn't try it.  Guy's wasn't bad but not my thing.

Oh well.

The CEO and I both voted for Sydney by drinking her full sized cocktails.  I had the banana and he had the thyme.

We didn't stay to hear the winner but, judging from the lines, Sydney took this one.

This wasn't a bad event.  It was obvious that the drinks were pre-planned as the bar backs had samples prepared as soon as the round was over.  And the drinks were really girlie overall, which was a let down for alcohol purist The CEO.  But we had a good time.

Up Next: Truffles, and I ain't talking about chocolate.

  1. Hi Erin! Thanks! I just got your comment on my blog (jacysfitnessblog.blogspot.com)! That's funny that you are from Effingham and now live up North. I am actually from the Washington DC area and went to SCAD for college and just stayed here in the Savannah area since. (Tried to move back, but it didn't work out at the time) I just joined the Foodie Penpal thing this month... maybe you can help me because the gal that I was paired with to send goodies to requested vegetarian and gluten free foods... OMG... I am totally not a vegetarian and I know nothing about gluten free. Woudl you have any suggestions?! LOL I was hoping to send some crazy Paula Deen stuff (to represent Savannah), but not sure if any of her things fall into that category... haha What are some Southern Snacks that you miss?

  2. Yikes! Gluten free and veggie in Georgia? That IS tough. Everything I can think about that I miss has gluten. Let's see. Things I love that are veggie and gf friendly...Boiled Peanuts and pralines from River Street Sweets (they actually have tons of gf stuff due to the nature of their candies). My Paula reccomendation would be one of her spice rubs. They are pretty good. Everything else I can think of is totally eithre packed with meat or flour :)
